Abstract
The reaction of dichloride anion radical with tetraammineplatinum(II) ion has been studied in aqueous, acidic solution using the fast-reaction technique of pulse radiolysis in conjunction with UV-visible absorption detection. The second-order rate constant for the reaction of Cl.2 radical with the platinum(II) complex is calculated to be (9±1) × 109 dm3·mol-1·s-1, and the reaction leads to products which absorb strongly in the region of 250–350 nm. Very similar spectral features arise from the reaction of hydroxyl radical and Pt(NH3)2+4 in the presence of low concentrations of free chloride ion. The transients are proposed to be platinum(III) chloro species, and the interrelationships between the species are discussed.
