Abstract
The two-year-old child speaks in phrases of two words, but much of what he says is understandable only to his parents. In addition to increasing his vocabulary, he still has to master the production of sounds and the grammatical structure of sentences. As he grows older, his mastery of speech matures until, by the time he is eight, his speech should be intelligible and as structurally-correct as that of the adults in his social environment.By knowing what to listen for and what to observe, any nurse can recognize deviations from normal that indicate a child needs help and should be referred for speech evaluation and possible treatment.
