Abstract
Nifedipine is one of the most successful compounds in pharmacology. The drug has substantially improved the therapeutic armamentarium of cardiovascular medicine. Because of its well-defined mechanism and high specificity of calcium antagonistic action, nifedipine has become an important tool in physiological and pathophysiological research into the role of calcium ions, and the pathogenesis of cardiovascular and numerous other diseases. Undoubtedly, nifedipine’s success has done much to stimulate new ways of thinking in medical sciences. Is nifedipine itself also an intellectual product of systematic scientific thinking? What premises led to the discovery of calcium antagonism as a therapeutic principle and nifedipine as a prominent drug in this field?
