Abstract
The electron paramagnetic resonance of VO ion in magnesium acetate tetrahydrate single crystals has been studied. It is found that VO ion enters the site of Mg ion and, by creating an H 2 0 vacancy, forms a complex tV0(H20)30f Of] , where OJ and Of are the oxygens of the coordinating acetate groups. The spectra are interpreted assuming axial symmetry. The orientation of the V-O axis is found not to coincide with the direction of H 2 0 molecule whose vacancy is created. It is suggested that the entry of VO ion produces displacement of the coordinating water molecules such that axial symmetry conditions are nearly maintained. For certain orientations of the crystal, superhyperfine structure of the order of 3 to 5 gauss is observed and is attributed to protons of the coordinating water molecules.
