Abstract
Abstract Thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers (TLCPs) with different substituents were synthesized from 2-bromoterephthalic acid with 2-ethoxyhydroquinone and phenylhydroquinone. Nanocomposites of the TLCPs with organically modified clays were prepared by the melt intercalation method above the melt transition temperature ( T m ) of the TLCPs. The liquid crystallinity, morphology, and thermomechanical behaviors were examined as the organoclay content increased from 0 to 6 wt%. The blends were synthesized by melt-blending a TLCP and a poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) hybrid containing 2 wt% organoclay. The blends of TLCP with PBT hybrids were melt-spun at different TLCP contents and different draw ratios to produce a monofilament. Transmission electron microscopy images showed that the clay layers of organoclay were intercalated and partially exfoliated in the PBT matrix regardless of the TLCP content in the hybrids.
