High Performance Polymers
Abstract
A series of benzoxazine compounds have been prepared from bifunctional phenol with formaldehyde and various aryl amines like aniline, 2-toluidine, and 2-amino pyridine. Bifunctional phenol was prepared by reacting ethylene diamine and 4-hydroxy benzaldehyde, and the molecular compositions of the precursors and monomers are characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectral techniques. The polymerization behavior of the monomer was monitored by differential scanning calorimetry and FTIR spectroscopy. The benzoxazine monomers were cured at 100, 140, 180, 200, and 240°C for 2 h. The obtained materials exhibit high char yield than the corresponding bisphenol-A-based polybenzoxazines (PBzs). The 2-amino pyridine-based PBz (PBz3) shows high char yield of 68% and thermal stability with 10% weight loss temperature of 420°C. Glass transition temperature, storage modulus, and cross-link density of the PBz resins were given by dynamic mechanical analysis. Limiting oxygen index values of 2-amino pyridine-based PBz indicate good flame-retardant properties.
