Abstract
Tolonium chloride (toluidine blue 0) is a phenothiazine dye which selectively concentrates in parathyroid tissue, abnormal thyroid tissue, heart, and pancreas. Utilization of tolonium chloride infusions at the time of neck exploration for hyperparathyroidism has shortened and simplified the operative procedure, and has more often allowed identification of the remaining normal parathyroid glands. Tissue distribution ratios and preliminary work with analogues of tolonium chloride labeled with 131 I suggest that tolonium chloride may be successfully adapted as a vehicle for parathyroid scintiscanning.
