Abstract
Objective: To assess the frequency of deficiency and insufficiency of vitamin D in migraineurs and to compare the clinical severity of migraine between those with and without vitamin D deficiency, adjusted with season, gender, and age. Background: Vitamin D deficiency is common in high altitude areas including Korea. The frequency and the influence of vitamin D deficiency in migraine patients are uncertain. Design/Methods We selected the migraine patients with assessment of their status of headache, psychological variable, and vitamin D level. Non-fasting serum 25(OH)D concentration was measured using chemiluminescent immunoassay from January to May 2017. Deficiency of vitamin D was defined as the concentration Results: A total of 164 patients, aged 37.2 ± 8.6 years, were selected. Female were 124 patients and male were 40 patients. Subtypes of migraine of participants were 117 migraine without aura, 9 migraine with aura, 34 chronic migraine, and 4 probable migraine. The frequency of vitamin D deficiency was 77.4% in total: 84.2% in winter, 89.8% in spring, 73.3% in summer, and 61.7% in autumn. The patients with vitamin D deficiency showed higher monthly headache days than those without (9.7 ± 7.8 vs. 7.3 ± 5.9, p=0.047). The age, sex, subtypes of migraine, severity of headache, and other psychological variables were not different according to deficiency of vitamin D. Upon Poisson regression analysis, monthly headache days were increased with deficiency of vitamin D (Odd Ratio 1.38, 95% confidence interval 1.16–1.64), after adjusting season, age, and gender. The level of vitamin D was correlated with HIT-6 scores (r = −0.27, p = 0.020) during summer to autumn, but these correlation was lost during winter to spring. Conclusions: The level of vitamin D may be associated with the frequency or impact of headache among migraineurs. Disclosure: Dr. Soo-Jin has nothing to disclose. Dr. Song has nothing to disclose.
