Abstract
Diethyl bromomalonate (1) reacts with trimethylamine at 0°C to give the bromide salt of trimethylammoniummalonate (2), however, in the presence of methanol, ethanol or 1-butanol the bromide of ethyl trimethylammoniumacetate (3) is obtained under the loss of dialkyl carbonates. The analogous reaction of 1 with dimethylsulfide yields diethyl methylthiomalonate (5).
