Abstract
1,2-dichlorobenzene is a colourless, highly fluid and non flammable liquid with an unpleasant odour. The odour threshold is at 50 ml/m. The substance is lipophilic and insoluble in water, but miscible with most organic solvents. 1,2-dichlorobenzene is used in large quantities as intermediate in the production of 3,4-dichloronitrobenzene (90 %) and as a solvent (10 %), e.g. in isocyanate production (Konietzko and Kern 1989). At the workplace, 1,2-dichlorobenzene can be taken up both as vapour by the respiratory tract and as liquid through the contaminated skin. The earlier MAK value of 50 ml 1,2-dichlorobenzene/m (Henschler 1988) was reduced to 10 ml/m in 2001 (Greim 2000).
