Abstract
Abstract 2(2-hydroxyphenyl)2H-benzotriazole ultraviolet stabilizers are now the most prominent and effective stabilizers for plastics materials, especially automotive coatings. This article provides a comprehensive review of the synthesis, photochemistry and photophysics of 2(2-hydroxyphenyl)2H-benzotriazole ultraviolet stabilizers. New approaches for optimization of UV stabilization using grafting, compatibilization, polymerizable stabilizers and polymer bound stabilizers are emphasized. A brief overview of surface active stabilization and stabilization of polymer blends is presented. Economic considerations, worldwide consumption estimates and commercial applications of this unique class of ultraviolet light stabilizers are among the topics discussed.
