Abstract
Abstract The infrared spectra of 2-bromo-3-chloro-1-propene have been recorded in the region 4000-50 cm−1 for the gaseous, liquid, amorphous and annealed solid at 90 K. Raman spectra of the neat liquid, as a solute in polar/non-polar solvents, and as an amorphous and crystalline solid at 90 K have also been obtained. Large intensity variations for several infrared and Raman bands are observed between the vapour and the liquid states. After prolonged annealing at ca. 160 K an apparently crystalline solid is obtained containing molecules predominantly in the gauche conformation. The gauche and anti conformers are present in nearly equal abundance in the vapour phase at 300 K, the equilibrium is shifted towards gauche in the neat liquid, in polar solvents and in the amorphous solid at 90 K. Almost all the fundamentals for both conformers are assigned to gauche and anti conformers.
