Abstract
Abstract 4-Methyl-3-heptanone has been identified as the main constituent present in the secretion from the scent glands of the opilionids Leiobunum formosum and L. speciosum . The contents of the scent glands are discharged when the opilionids are irritated and can function as an effective defensive secretion against invertebrate predators such as ants. The significance of 4-methyl-3-heptanone being utilized as a defensive secretion by arachnids is discussed in the light of the role that this compound plays as an alarm pheromone of myrmicine ants.
