Abstract
The compound 5-oxytryptamine is considered by many as the best agent for protecting animals against the effects of radiation but its unfavorable pharmacological properties prevent its use. For this reason, the following derivatives of the original compounds were prepared: 4-methoxy tryptamine; 5-, 6- , and 7-methoxy tryptamine; and also the 5 ethoxy-, 5-butoxy-, and the 5-benzoxy- tryptamine. White mice and rats were injected with the test compounds and were exposed to x radiation. Results showed that introducion of the methoxy group ln the 5 position into the indol ing of the tryptamine enhances noticeably the protective iction of the original compound against radiation; the derivative in the 4 position affects the survival rate to a lesser extent; the 6 derivative showed only a slight effect while the 7 derivative was completely ineffective. Lengthening of the C chain in the 5 position resulted in an increase of the toxicity. (TTT)
