Abstract
The aim of this work is to study the adsorption of a cationic dye (Janus Green B) on a non-expensive natural material. The diatomite was recovered by the Sig deposit (west of Algeria) and then was modified by simple acid treatment. The structural, textural and morphological properties of obtained materials were analyzed by different physico-chemical techniques such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), Argon sorption at 87 K, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis TGA, x-ray fluorescence (XRF) and pH of zero charge PZC. The results showed that the adsorption of the Janus Green B (JGB) dye is very fast and the equilibrium was reached after 90 min. The kinetic data were modeled using the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second order equations. The equilibrium isotherm data were verified using the Langmuir, Freundlich and the Sips models. The results showed that the adsorption of JGB dye on raw diatomite and its modified counterpart followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic. The maximum adsorbed amount was obtained by raw diatomite, in which maximum adsorbed capacity Qm of 39.89 mg g−1 was recorded.
