Abstract
Tannic acid, a representative background compound of source water and biologically treated sewage effluent, was chosen to study the competitive effect on the adsorption of phenol by a bi-functional polymeric adsorbent.Single solute adsorption, simultaneous adsorption and preloading experiments were performed. The result indicated that tannic acid had a dramatic effect on phenol adsorption onto resin through different mechanisms, including interactions between adsorbates and pore blockage. The interaction between adsorbates weakened resin adsorption force towards phenol;pore blockage decreased the primary micropore adsorption sites for phenol, resulting in a reduction in the heterogeneity of adsorbent surface.
