Abstract
Summary Tissue preference of the agropine production in Ri-transformed tobacco was investigated by high voltage paper electrophoresis (HVPE), northern hybridization, and the s-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene expression assay. Agropine was predominantly detected in hairy roots and in root system of regenerated plants. The messenger RNA for agropine synthase was also predominandy detected in these organs. The GUS activity expressed from the agropine synthase gene ( ags ) promoter was detected mainly in roots, especially at elongating regions of transgenic plants. This tissue preference of the ags gene from Ri plasmid (Ri- ags ) is distinct from those of the corresponding gene from Ti plasmid (Ti- ags ).
