Abstract
Abstract The results of a monitoring program with respect to aniline, chloroanilines, dichloroanilines and 2- and 4-methylaniline in Dutch rivers are presented. The results cover the year 1979. The aromatic amines were determined individually after bromination using a specific gas chromatographic method. Aniline, 2-, 3- and 4-chloroaniline, 3,4-dichloroaniline and 4-methylaniline had the highest frequencies of occurrence in the river Rhine and its tributaries. Aniline was found in the highest concentrations (up to 12 μg l −1 ). The results of a sampling trip by boat in 1974 made along the river Rhine from Rheinfelden in Switzerland to Rotterdam in the Netherlands are also given. The sums of aromatic amines and their derivatives were determined colorimetrically.
