Abstract
The molecular structure and conformational compositions of 2-bromoethanol (BE) and 2-iodoethanol (IE) have been investigated in the gas phase by electron diffraction, each one at three nozzle-tip temperatures (BE at 60, 135, and 200 o C; IE at 10, 130, and 200 o C). Both molecules exist as a mixture of anti and gauche (heavy-atom) conformers, with the latter as the more stable. The stability of the gauche form relative to the anti form may be attributed in good part to the formation of an internal hydrogen bond. This stability is greater in BE than in IE, in accord with expectation about the relative strengths of the H O ---X hydrogen bonds
