Abstract
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the analytical profile of mexiletine hydrochloride. Its generic names are katen, mexitil, mexitilen, and ritalmex. Its molecular weight is 179.3. It is a white or almost white, odorless, crystalline powder. Its melting range is 203-205°C. It is freely soluble in water and in methyl alcohol, sparingly soluble in chloroform, insoluble in ether. The infrared (IR) spectrum of mexiletine hydrochloride as KBr disc was recorded on a Perkin Elmer 580 B infrared spectrometer to which an infrared data station is attached. Pharmacokinetic studies with simultaneous determination of mexiletine and one of its metabolites are being performed in a cardiological unit for drug monitoring. In order to adapt the posology to the patient, pharmacokinetic parameters were measured after the administration of a single dose of mexiletine by oral route with chronic ventricular ectopic beats.
