Abstract
A review of the literature in a cursory study of the wood structure of Sciadopitys verticillata Sieb. and Zucc. aroused in the writer a desire to investigate thoroughly this phase of the "umbrella pine." This curious monotype is a native of Japan, and, although several general anatomical studies include Sciadopitys, there is no reported investigation of a more detailed nature. Nakamura (I883) associates it with Cryptomeria japonica and Thujopsis laetevirens. Fujioka (I9I3), Iwaki (I9I8), and Kanehira (I926) class it as Taxodinean in anatomy. Burgerstein (I908) and Slyper (I933) have composed keys based on the conclusions of existing reports and supplementary investigation. Mention of ray cell pitting is made by Record (I934). Noteworthy studies which omit Sciadopitys are those of Russow (I883) and Penhallow (I 907). It is hoped that the present paper may throw new light on the question of conifer phylogeny.
