Abstract
Alkylation of 5-fluorouracil with 1-bromopentane or 5-chloropentyl p-nitrobenzoate in dimethyl sulfoxide in the presence of potassium carbonate and sodium iodide occurred at the N3-position. In contrast, alkylation with allylic-type halides, such as allyl bromide and benzyl chloride, occurred at the N1-position. These results are in contrast to alkylation of uracil where either saturated or allylic halides gave alkylation of N1.
