Abstract
On radiolysis, sodium formate in aqueous solution gives products which may be quantitatively titrated with acid permanganate. This system is proposed as a chemical dosimeter in the range 1 to 80 Mrad and is particularly convenient for use in metal systems. The chemical change is proportional to the energy absorbed, and the yield of reductant (G = 3.40 mol. equiv./100 e.v.) is independent of dose rate, formate ion concentration over a wide range, and temperature.
