Abstract
Abstract The diagnostic arteriographic findings in polyarteritis nodosa may not be demonstrated because of severe vascular resistance, reducing regional blood flow and contrast concentration in the viscera studied. Tolazoline hydrochloride, a vasoactive drug which transiently improves blood flow, was selectively infused prior to renal arteriography in 2 patients with polyarteritis nodosa complicated by perirenal hematoma formation. Comparison of pre- and post-tolazoline infusion arteriograms demonstrated markedly improved visualization in the postinfusion study. Polyarteritis nodosa was recognized in one patient only after tolazoline infusion. In both patients, perirenal hematomas were assessed only in postinfusion arteriograms.
