Abstract
Tolazoline hydrochloride (1) is a sympatholytic vasodilator acting upon the alpha receptors of the postganglionic fibers. In peripheral arteriography it permits a greater visualization of the small vessels (2, 3) and has been shown to increase the blood flow to the skeletal muscles of the lower extremities (4–6). The purposes of this study were (a) to record the decrease in circulation time with tolazoline; (b) to achieve increased visualization of small vessels and collaterals; (c) to plot the filling time of peripheral vessels in order to establish technics for arteriography; (d) to determine the amount of vasospastic activity in smokers as compared with nonsmokers. Materials and Methods Twenty-eight patients were studied (55 extremities), 16 males and 12 females, with ages ranging from forty-four to sixty-nine years. Nine of the 28 were asymptomatic. Twenty-one of the patients smoked at least 20 cigarettes per day, and 7 were nonsmokers. In the majority of cases arteriography was performed by passing t...
