Abstract
Abstract Association of tris(pentane-2,4-dionato)cobalt(III) [Co(acac) 3 ] with chlorophenols, dichlorophenols, trichlorophenols and pentachlorophenol in heptane has been studied by the liquid-liquid partition technique in the heptane-0.10 mol dm −3 aqueous perchlorate solution system. From the partition equilibrium, the association complexes with the chlorinated phenols(HA) were found to be Co(acaC) 3 ·HA and Co(acac) 3 ·2HA, and the association constants were determined. Existence of the hydrogen bond between the hydroxyl proton of the phenols and Co(acac) 3 was evidenced from the 1 H NMR measurement. The relationship between the association constant and the acid-dissociation constant of the phenols is discussed.
