Abstract
Summary The electrochemical oxidation of p -toluidine was investigated at platinum and carbon paste electrodes with periodic renewal of the diffusion layer, and at carbon paste electrodes with cyclic voltammetry in the pH range 0.7–12. It is pointed out that p -toluidine gives rise to two oxidation waves in the pH range 3.0–6.5. The two waves are attributed to the oxidation of p -toluidine to the radical cation and to the further oxidation of the same radical cation. Oxidation mechanisms consistent with the kinetic parameters are proposed. As regards the anodic oxidation products, the possibility of para -group elimination is excluded; there are, however, indications of the formation of the ortho -coupling product 2-amino-4′,5-dimethyldiphenylamine.
