Abstract
BERBERINE, an alkaloid derived from the plant Berberis aristata Linn., has been shown to be useful in the treatment of experimental cholera in the infant rabbit model1. It compares well with chloramphenicol in the chemotherapy of cholera and severe diarrhoea in humans2. Results of the investigations on Entamoeba histolytica reported here suggest that berberine and its salts, such as berberine sulphate, may have a place in the chemotherapy of amoebiasis.
