Abstract
1. When 2-benzoylthiophene is brominated in the presence of excess aluminum chloride without a solvent, the bromine enters only into the thiophene ring, with the formation of the 4-bromo- and 5-bromo-2-benzoylthiophenes (in a 6∶1 ratio), and also 4,5-dibromo-2-benzoylthiophene. 2. In the presence of a catalytic amount of aluminum chloride, in a solvent, the bromination of 2-benzoylthiophene also takes place in the thiophene ring with the formation of 5-bromo-2-benzoylthiophene,
