Abstract
ABSTRACT REVIEW OF LITERATURE THE chlorinated phenoxyacetic acids, 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) and 2,4,5-T (2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid), are commonly used as sprays for the control of undesirable weeds and brush. Several studies of the effects of these chemicals on small animals, livestock, and chickens have been reviewed by Rowe and Hymas (1954). Bjorn and Northen (1948) administered the alkanolamine salt of 2,4-D orally, by pipette, to chicks weighing about 50 grams at the start. One part of the alkanolamine salt was diluted with 19 parts of water and dosages in terms of the acid equivalent of 0.28, 2.80, 28.00, and 280.00 mg. per kg. of body weight were given three times a week on alternate days for a period of four weeks, a total of 12 doses. Dosages up to 28 mg./kg. had no effect but the 280 mg./kg. dose caused some depression of growth. When the alkanolamine salt of 2,4-D, diluted 1:9 . . .
