Abstract
Red light photolysis of 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane (t-BuNO) in ethylbenzene in the presence of oxygen, leads to acetophenone and 1-phenylethanol as main oxidation products via hydrogen abstraction by a photochemically generated adduct of oxygen to the nitroso compound. Yields and product distribution depend on the t-BuNO concentration during the photooxidation, in accordance with the proposed mechanism. Other hydrocarbons with easily abstractable hydrogens react similarly.
