Abstract
Abstract Calcium sulphate dihydrate was investigated as a possible alternative to autogenous bone grafts to help restore osseous defects of the jaw. A suitable porosity was induced in the material and spherical specimens implanted subcutaneously in rats to determine the tissue reaction and rate of resorption in vivo. A technique was developed to adjust the rate of biodegradation and was tested by implanting porous cylinders which showed progressive resorption at a rate commensurate with that of new bone ingrowth.
