Abstract
Abstract Goldfish (Carassius auratus), historically considered as an ornamental species, is widely used as an important model organism for a wide variety of research applications, including biomedical research. For instance, it has proven a suitable model for studies on endocrinology, reproduction, and neurology. Studies on cardiac function and gut motility are other examples of biomedical research conducted using goldfish. This chapter will provide an overview of the biology of the species, as well as the most relevant information concerning its husbandry and care, so that readers can have sufficient knowledge to properly use goldfish for their studies. It will also provide a brief summary using selected recent examples on the use of goldfish in biomedical research that has relevance in health and diseases.
