Abstract
Bromide geochemistry played an important role in searching and in mechanism revealing of marine phase potassium deposits has been studied for a century since it was first founded in 1908 by the Germany scientist,Boeke. This paper reviewed the geochemical characteristics of bromide and its applications in the studies of potassium deposits.Especially, this paper comprehensively addressed new research progresses of partition coefficients and thermodynamic models of bromide. In recent years,Br content in the marine evaporates was used to evaluate variation of seawater composition in the Phanerozoic, and was thought to be very important in re-recognizing the forming mechanisms of MgSO4-free potassium deposits.Compared to the dolomitization or the MgSO4 depleting, the change of the hydrothermal brine flux composition at mid-ocean ridge and the spreading of ocean floor were much more important mechanisms of causing the variation of seawater composition. In the end part of this paper, several suggestions were made on studies of a MgSO4-free potassium deposit's characteristics in Laos,as an example. We believed that the better understanding of the K-Mg deposit in Laos will provide essential aids to the attempt of hunting potassium deposits at the Lanping-Simao basin of China.
