Abstract
Abstract Aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) is an electrically insulating ceramic with phonons as heat carriers; nickel aluminide (NiAl) is an intermetallic with free electrons. In the present study, dense NiAl–Al 2 O 3 composites are prepared by hot-pressing. The Al 2 O 3 content in the composites varies from 0% to 100%. The thermal properties of the composites, including thermal diffusivity and heat capacity, are measured independently. The thermal conductivity is then calculated accordingly. Attempts are made to establish the upper and lower bounds for the experimental data. Though the values predicted by the parallel–series bounds cover most of the experimental data, the values for composites with either isolated NiAl or Al 2 O 3 particles are not within these bounds; these composites may offer new opportunities for thermal management applications.
