Abstract
Triolein has been identified as the major brood-tending pheromone isolated from the sexual brood of the imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren. Workers respond by rapidly picking up filter-paper discs treated with a chloroform :methanol sexual pharate pupal extract, triolein isolated from sexual brood, and synthetic triolein, and placing these in the colony. The discs treated with the brood extract, and with the synthetic material were not placed with worker brood, but were placed with sexual pharate pupae introduced into test colonies. The treated discs were active for over 24 h.
