Abstract
The research described in this thesis was undertaken in order to accomplish two main objectives. The first was to measure the stability of the complexes formed by each of the trivalent rare earth cations with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, abbreviated EDTA, and with N-hydroxyethylethylenediaminetriacetic acid, abbreviated HEDTA. The second objective was to find methods for using the two chelating agents in conjunction with an ion-exchange resin for separating the rare earths.
