Abstract
Abstract The effects of micellization on the Cu 2+ chelating properties of ethanedioic acid his [(1-pyrenylmethylene)hydrazide] (OAPH), ethanedioic acid hydrazide (pyren-1-ylmethylene)hydrazide (OAmPH) and ethanedioic acid bis[(1-naphthylmethylene)hydrazide] (OANH) in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) are examined by fluorescence spectroscopy techniques. Photophysical measurements indicate mainly monomer emission for the pyrenyl derivatives and intramolecular excimer-type emission for OANH. In SDS, very efficient quenching by Cu 2+ without changes in fluorescence lifetimes were observed indicating strong ground-state complexation. The strength of the chelation was highlighted in CTAB where efficient quenching was still observed with OAPH and, to a lesser degree, OANH. However, no quenching was observed with OAmPH. The data is interpreted as indicating that for OAPH and OANH the chelating portions of the bis-hydrazide are located towards the micelle/water interface, while OAmPH resides more towards the hydrophobic core. The usefulness of these experiments in furthering the understanding of ethanedioic acids bis-hydrazides as inhibitors of copper catalysed polymer degradation is discussed.
