Abstract
The bleomycins are a structurally related class of antitumour antibiotics that are utilised extensively for the treatment of human malignancies1,2. In common with many antitumour agents, the cellular locus for the action of bleomycin is thought to be DNA. More specifically, bleomycin can be activated for DNA strand scission and this transformation is believed to constitute the basis for the therapeutic utility of this class of compounds2–7.
