Abstract
Abstract With the aim of verifying whether ammonium can be used as a probe to follow potassium in chemical systems, NH4L (L = an anion of an organic acid, HL, viz. 2-nitrophenol (OnpH), 2,4-dinitrophenol (DnpH), 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (PicH) or 2-hydroxybenzoic acid (SalH)) salts have been synthesised and their reaction with HL, 1,10-phenanthroline (PHEN), benzo-15-crown-5- (CROWN-5), and dibenzo-30-crown-10 (CROWN-10) were investigated. Novel compounds of ammonium, NH4(Dnp, DnpH), NH4L(PHEN) (L = Dnp−, Sal− and Pic−), NH4L(CROWN-5) (L = Dnp− and Pic−) and the bimetallic (NH4L)2(CROWN-10) (L = Dnp− and Pic−) have been isolated in the solid state. Results on the whole do not indicate that ammonium is a suitable probe for potassium.
