Abstract
Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a powerful, selective oxidant and broad-spectrum biocide. Chlorine dioxide has substantially displaced chlorine in pulp bleaching, and its use in drinking water treatment has increased significantly. Chlorine dioxide is finding important new applications, especially when applied as a gas—e.g., to remediate buildings contaminated by Anthrax spores. The generation method is critical to the quality of the chlorine dioxide produced. Certain generation methods suit some applications, but not others. Careful matching of the generation method to the requirements of the specific application at hand is necessary to the safe, effective, and economic use of chlorine dioxide.
