Abstract
The chemistry of carbonic and carbonochloridic esters, commonly referred to as chloroformates and carbonates, is reviewed. These materials are highly reactive with a variety of functional groups and lead to synthetic intermediates for use in pesticides, perfumes, drugs, polymers, dyes, and fuel additives. This article emphasizes the commercial aspects of the carbonate and chloroformate chemistry, including physical and chemical properties, manufacturing processes, analytical test methods, health and effects, environmental aspects, storage, transportation, and uses.
