Abstract
Ethotoin, 3-ethyl-5-phenylhydantoin, is an anti-epileptic whose clinical efficacy has been investigated in a limited number of studies (Carter and Maley, 1957; Gruber et al., 1962; Livingston, 1956; Schwade et al., 1956; Zimmerman and Burgemeister, 1958) and has been shown to be of some value in anti-epileptic therapy. The use of other hydantoins, such as phenytoin and mephenytoin, as primary anti-epileptic agents has led to very little being known about the metabolism, absorption, and excretion of ethotoin in seizure patients receiving chronic doses of this drug. Knowledge of the blood levels of ethotoin in seizure patients is sparse and there has been no effort to correlate their relationship to seizure control.
