Abstract
The major circulating form of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) is the 28-amino-acid peptide Ser 99-Tyr 126, with a minor form, probably due to degradation in plasma, being the 24-amino-acid peptide Ser 103-Tyr 126. Sensitive and specific radioimmunoassays have been developed to measure ANF in plasma and in atria and are widely used for physiopathologic studies in humans and rats. A major clinical finding is the normal concentration of ANF in mild essential hypertension.
