Abstract
Ethyl 2,2,4-trimethyl-3-oxopentanoate is cleaved with sodium tert-butoxide into simple esters, part of which is substituted with sodium in the α-position. Reaction mixtures arising in this way from this ketoester or from some other ones rapidly induce the polymerization of methyl methacrylate. The role of such a cleavage in the reactivation of the pseudoterminated propagation centre in the anionic polymerization of methacrylates is discussed.
