Abstract
Methylionone applied full strength to intact or abraded rabbit skin for 24 h under occlusion was moderately irritating. A patch test using methylionone at full strength for 24 h produced no reactions in 16 subjects (3). A maximization test carried out on 25 volunteers with methylionone 10% pet. produced no sensitization (4). The estimated frequency of sensitization (EFS) of the ionones is 3, uncommon, according to data quoted by Nater & de Groot (5). The concentration and vehicle for patch testing is 2% pet. (Fregert and Hjorth) or 0.5% o.o. (Bandmann) (6). Although it is difficult to find perfumes and colognes (excluding natural and citric colognes) without methylionone or ionone, sensitization to these fragrances has rarely been reported. Schulteiss (7) reported a case of hypersensitivity to ionone and benzyl alcohol. A positive patch test with y-methylionone was reported by De Groot & Liem (8).
