Abstract
Abstract An interesting series of four novel mixed ligand Co(III) complexes of 2-hydroxyacetophenone 4-phenyl semicarbazone (H2L), heterocyclic base, B [1,10-phenanthroline (phen), piperidine (pip) and pyrrolidine (pyrr)] and azide/thiocyanate (X) with a general formula [CoLBxX] (where x=1 for phen and 2 for pip and pyrr) were prepared. They were characterized by a variety of physico-chemical techniques. All the four complexes are diamagnetic indicating that the cobalt is in a d6 strong field. The tridentate character of the semicarbazone in all cases is inferred from IR spectra. The structure of the compound CoLphenN3 is solved by single crystal X-ray diffraction. It shows that the compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, [space group is P 21 21 21, a=10.6590(8) A, b=11.9150(16) A, c=19.1650(4) A, Z=4]. The coordination geometry around the cobalt is distorted octahedral with tridentate L2−, bidentate phenanthroline and unidentate azido anion. The azido nitrogens and phenanthroline hydrogens form intermolecular hydrogen bonds to give a sandwich type of packing to the molecule.
