Abstract
INTRODUCTION Archer & coZZeagues (1962) and WyZie & Archer (1962) described a new class of compounds, the indolyl-alkyl-phenyl-piperazines, and demonstrated their potentialities as psychotropic agents by laboratory experiments. PreIhinary clinical investigations of one of this group of compounds, oxypertine, showed its effectiveness in controlling the symptoms of schizophrenia (DureZZ & Pollin (1963), Flament et al. (1964), Friedhoff & Hekimian (1963), HoZlister et al. ( 1963) ) . Further clinical trials (CaZweZZ et aZ. ( 1964), Hunt ( 1967), Skarbek & Hill (1967) ) confirmed this finding. Skarbek & Jacobsen (1965) reviewed the clinical experience with oxypertine, and suggested that the compound is particularly useful in the treatment of “withdrawn” chronic schizophrenic patients. This study sets out to compare the effects of oxypertine with those of chlorpromazine in 40 chronic withdrawn schizophrenic patients, in the form of a double blind between patient trial and to investigate EEG changes and galvanic skin responses in 18 of these patients.
