Abstract
SummaryA double-blind study comparing some of the pharmacologic effects of oxyphencyclimine hydrochloride and propantheline bromide is reported in 40 male patients with active duodenal ulcer. In this study, emphasis was placed on gastric secretory effects of these anticholinergic drugs before and after vagus stimulation. The data obtained from the measurement of H+ concentration and total acid output in milliequivalents per hour were subjected to statistical analysis and the results noted. Side effects of the 2 anticholinergic drugs were described. Oxyphencyclimine hydrochloride and propantheline bromide are effective in suppressing gastric secretion and are accompanied by side effects. It would appear from the study that oxyphencyclimine hydrochloride is more potent than propantheline bromide in depressing gastric secretion, and is accompanied by fewer undesirable side effects. This study also reaffirms the amelioration, by cholinergic blockade, of vagus stimulation due to hypoglycemia.
