Abstract
Abstract The water soluble heterocyclic ligands pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde-2-imidazoline hydrazone L1 and its methyl derivative L2 were synthesized as the hydrobromide salts, L1·HBr and L2·HBr, respectively. They display different binding modes towards Hg2+ and Cu2+, respectively, as revealed by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The new ligand L2·HBr was investigated as a chromogenic and ratiometric agent for selective detection of Cu2+ and it exhibits a characteristic absorption peak at 411 nm with bluish green coloration in presence of Cu2+. The change in color can easily be distinguished from other metal complexes by the naked eye. The binuclear Cu2+ complex 2b exhibits a strong interaction towards DNA as revealed from Kb (UV–Vis) 1.516 × 104 M−1, K (fluorescence) 1.8145 × 104 M−1, n (binding site size) 0.8 and Ksv (Stern–Volmer quenching constant) 2.14 values.
